The Department of English, Sri Sathya Sai College for Women organized a seminar in association with IQAC on the topic entitled “Mother Tongue, English and Multilingualism in India” on 26th November 2024 in the college premises. Guests were welcomed by Ms. Pravati Panda, faculty of English, with an introductory speech on the topic. The seminar started with traditional lamp lighting ceremony, followed by Veda chanting making the atmosphere serene with a positive vibe. Dr Swapna Mallick, Head of the Department introduced the esteemed speaker of the day Dr. Ramesh Chandra Malik, Assistant Proffessor(Deptt. of Odia) Utkal University Vanivihar, Bhubaneswar. Dr. Ramesh Chandra Malik has a research experience of twelve years, post doctoral fellow in linguistics whose research specializations are general linguistics, translation studies, literary criticism, ethnography studies and dalit studies. He emphasized on mother tongue, multilingualism and also drew attention to built up skills like listening, speaking, reading and writing with proper understanding. Governing Body president Sri Sunil Kumar Rath addressed the gathering with emphasis on mother tongue by citing examples of great eminent personalities who are expert in mother tongue as well as in many other languages. The seminar came to an end with the felicitation of the speaker and vote of thanks by Ms. Manini Pattnaik, Faculty in English, to all the faculty members and participants whose presence and involvement made the seminar a grand success with a promising note to carry forward the knowledge and ideas gained from the seminar with an application in our academic and professional journey.
