A one-day seminar was organised by Department of Sociology through Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) in the topic entitled “Coal Mining Caused Environment Crisis versus Displaced People” on 18th sept 2025 in SSSCW, BBSR, where prof Dr. Rabindra Garada, Associate Prof, HOD Dept. of Sociology Utkal University, Vanivihar was Invited as the resource person to deliver his talk. The seminar was held with the gracious presence of the Principal Dr. Niharika Das, Mrs. Smita Biswal, HOD Dept. Sociology, Dr.Snigdha Samadarsani Lecturer in Sociology, all other faculties of the college & students from various department. The seminar was hosted by Swapna Ray +3 3rd year student & started after lighting up of lamps in front of the almighty followed by the guest introduce by Dr.Snigdha Samadarsani Lecturer in Sociology & Mrs. Smita Biswal gave introduction of the theme.
The seminar connected with a keynote address by Prof. Rabindra Garada who emphasizes the profound conflicts between the economic benefits of coal mining & its divesting human & environment costs, using Talcher coal fields Paradip, Odisha as a case study. He talks the central them is the disparity between the macro-economic “development” narrative & the micro-level reality of “Survival” for local communities. He also said the economic imperative benefits of coal mining are often highlighted, economic growth, employment, infrastructure, energy security. The environmental crisis caused by coal mining are air pollution, water pollution, land degradation.
The most critical aspect of this conflicts is the profound impact on human life & survival. The seminar focuses on the displaced ecosystem people who are the direct victims of this development model like forced displaced & livelihood, inadequate rehabilitation, social & cultural disintegrate, health & wellbeing. He was specially against the open-cast mining. He talks about doing the landfilling & reasonable amount of compensation to the displaced people. His talk was following by a brainstorming question session. At the end principal felicitated to the resources person. The semester came to an end by a vote of thanks by Miss. Laxmi Priya Saho +3 2nd year students.
