The Department of Sociology, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Sri Sathya Sai College for Women, Bhubaneswar, successfully organized a One-Day Seminar on “Youth in the Digital Age: Understanding Gen Z and Social Change” on 19 September 2026. The seminar aimed to explore the changing social realities of Generation Z, the influence of digital technologies on youth culture, identity, education, relationships, and the broader process of social transformation. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members and undergraduate students, providing an enriching academic platform for discussion and interaction.
The seminar commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp before the Almighty, symbolizing the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom. The inaugural session was graced by Dr. Prasant Kumar Pradhan (Principal-in-Charge & Head, Department of Economics), Dr. Snigdha Samadarsani, (Head, Department of Sociology), Mrs. Smita Biswal (Retired Reader in Sociology), Mrs. Mamata Padhy (Lecturer in Sociology), Mrs. Pravati Panda (Faculty Member), Ms. Akankhya Mohapatra (Lecturer in English).
The programme was beautifully anchored by Sara Singh (+3 Third Year) and Anwesha Sarangi (+3 First Year), who welcomed the guests and audience with confidence and enthusiasm. Mrs. Mamata Padhy delivered the welcome address and introduced the theme of the seminar. She highlighted how digital technology has transformed the everyday lives of young people and emphasized the need to understand the opportunities and challenges experienced by Generation Z in contemporary society. Dr. Snigdha Samadarsani formally introduced the Resource Person, Dr. Debadutta Pradhan, Lecturer in Sociology, Kamala Nehru Women’s College, Bhubaneswar, outlining her academic achievements and contribution to sociological studies. Dr. Debadutta Pradhan delivered an insightful keynote lecture on “Youth in the Digital Age: Understanding Gen Z and Social Change.” The major themes of her lecture included: Characteristics and identity of Generation Z, Digital media and changing social relationships, Impact of social networking on youth behaviour and mental well-being, Digital citizenship, ethics, and responsible online engagement, Technology, education, and emerging career opportunities, The role of youth in promoting inclusive and progressive social change. Her presentation combined sociological theories with contemporary examples, making the session highly engaging and relevant for students. Following the keynote lecture, a brainstorming question-and-answer session was conducted. Students actively interacted with the Resource Person by raising thoughtful questions regarding social media, digital identity, cyber ethics, youth participation, and the future of society in the digital era. The discussion encouraged critical thinking and meaningful academic dialogue. As a token of gratitude and appreciation, Dr. Prasant Kumar Pradhan, Principal-in-Charge, felicitated Dr. Debadutta Pradhan with a memento and expressed sincere thanks for her valuable contribution to the seminar. The programme concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks proposed by Mrs. Mamata Padhy, Lecturer in Sociology. She expressed gratitude to the Principal-in-Charge, the Resource Person, distinguished guests, faculty members, organizers, student volunteers, and all participants for making the seminar a grand success.
